KMCH Blood Bank is licensed by the Drugs Controller of Tamil Nadu and Drugs Controller General of India.

The Department of Blood Bank encourages 100% voluntary blood donation. Blood Bank is fully equipped with State of the Art (The highest level of development) equipments for component preparation, screening and storage.

Blood and components available

Whole human blood IP – Stored at 4°C +/- 2°C for 35 days
Packed Red cells – Stored at 4°C +/- 2°C for 42 days
Fresh Frozen plasma – Stored at -80°C for one year
Platelet Rich Concentrate – Stored at 22°C for 5days from the day of collection with agitation
Cryoprecipitate – At -80°C for one year

Donor Eligibility:

Age:
Between 18 years and 60 years both Male and Female can donate blood.
Sex:
Both the sex can donate Blood. During the menstrual period female cannot donate blood. Five days before starting of menstrual cycle and 5 days after completion of menstrual cycle female can donate blood.
Weight:
Both male and female have to weigh 45 kg and above for 350 ml donation and 50kg and above for 450ml donation.
Haemoglobin level:
The haemoglobin level should be 12.5 gm % and above in both male and female.
Free from disease:
The donor should be free from any of diseases, viral infection and seizure disorder (fits).
Pregnant Women:
Pregnant woman and lactating mother should not donate blood.
Interval of Blood Donation:
There should be three months interval between the first donation and the second donation.
Blood pressure:
The donor should have a systolic pressure of 90-180 mm and the diastolic blood pressure of 70-100 mm Hg.
Surgery:
Those who have undergone surgery can donate blood only after six months from the time of surgery.

Only those with above mentioned eligibility can donate blood.

HbsAg - Australia Antigen. Hepatitis B virus that causes jaundice
HCV - Hepatitis C virus that causes jaundice
HIV I&II - That causes AIDS
VDRL - Syphilis the Venerial disease
MP/MF - That causes malarial fever
PCV - Packed cell volume
Hb% - Hemoglobin
HIV P24 Ag - On the request by donor

With the consent of the donor the above tests are being done and the donor is having every right to know his test reports and to collect his test report and certificate.
