Dr. Durairaj Arjunan began his medical journey at Madurai Medical College and Government Rajaji Hospital, where he laid a strong clinical foundation and was mentored by the renowned Prof. M. Natrajan during his undergraduate years. Inspired by his mentors and driven by academic rigor, he completed his internship in 2014 and went on to pursue postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at PGIMER, Chandigarh—one of India's premier institutes for medical education. From 2015 to 2017, during his Junior Residency at PGIMER, he worked under the guidance of eminent physicians including Prof. Subhash Varma, Dr. Savita Kumari, and Prof. Sanjay Jain, which deepened his interest in internal medicine and steered him toward academic excellence. After completing his MD in December 2017, Dr. Arjunan continued as a Senior Resident in Internal Medicine at PGIMER, gaining extensive exposure across subspecialties including Clinical Hematology, Medical Oncology, Rheumatology, and Emergency Medicine. During this period, he also served in high-altitude medical camps at Sheshnag Base Camp (12,800 ft) in Kashmir, where he managed acute high-altitude illnesses and honed his skills in austere environments. His growing passion for endocrinology, nurtured at PGIMER—the first institute in India to establish a dedicated Department of Endocrinology—motivated him to further pursue this specialty. From 2019 to 2021, he worked in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at IPGMER and SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, where he received extensive training in clinical endocrinology, with a particular focus on neonatal and pediatric endocrinology over 18 months. His clinical acumen in endocrinology was further shaped under the mentorship of Dr. Subhankar Choudhury, Prof. Satinath Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Diwakar Biswas, and Dr. Rana Bhattacharjee. During this tenure, he also developed a strong interest in research, guided by eminent faculty members such as Prof. Pradip Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Sujoy Ghosh. In 2022, he returned to PGIMER, Chandigarh, for his DM in Endocrinology. During this tenure, he received structured training in diverse endocrine subspecialties under the guidance of leading experts: Pituitary disorders (Dr. Pinaki Dutta), metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis (Prof. Sanjay Bhadada), adrenal and gonadal disorders including Cushing’s syndrome and PCOS (Dr. Rama Walia), diabetic foot and peripheral neuropathy (Dr. Ashu Rastogi), young-onset diabetes and hypoparathyroidism (Dr. Soham Mukherjee), and biochemical endocrinology (Dr. Naresh Sahdev). His time at PGIMER was marked by a deepening commitment to academic medicine, with extensive involvement in clinical research, publications, and teaching.
