Audiology & Speech Pathology

Dealing with disorders of speech and hearing is a comparatively new area of remedial treatment even in advanced countries; But at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, we have got state-of-the-art facilities to help us diagnose and treat these disorders. Audiology This is concerned with different methods of testing the hearing in adults and children. We have a well equipped sound proof room with ELKON Audiometer and Impedance Audiometer. We also have Electronystagmogram (ENG) equipment for assessment of balance disorders.

Tests undertaken here include: Pure Tone Audiometry with masking Tympanogram and Impedance Audiometry to detect middle ear pathology Stapedial reflexes Eustachian tubal function Speech Tests which include ABLB, SISI, Stengers test Speech Audiometry (SDS,SRT) - in preoperative evaluation of stapedotomy patients and to test comprehension of speech in patients with sensory neural loss Hearing aid trial. Speech Therapy This is concerned with the assessment of disorders that can be cured under speech therapy. They are Stammering Cleft Palate Speech - pre and post operative Voice disorders due to vocal nodules, dysphonia, puberphonia and voice abuse Misarticulation In addition, speech therapy is also given to patients with complex neurological problems like Mental Retardation Autism Cerebral Palsy Aphasia (Stroke) Dysarthria Apraxia The department is also teaching post laryngectomy patients, the use of oesophageal speech and training in indwelling voice prosthesis (Blom Singer and Provox Valves)
